Cafeteria
Catering is a fertile area for sustainable changes to the university's ecological footprint. For this reason, it has so far been at the centre of two working group projects.
Reduction of disposable coffee cups
Back in 2013, the Sustainability Office ran a pilot project called ‘Refiller-Friendly University of Basel’, in which an attempt was made over a two-month period to make the university's cafeterias more sustainable by providing reusable cups. The project is now being rolled out again by students from the Sustainability working group in collaboration with the Catering Commission and SV Services.

Aim of the project
The project aims to reduce the use of non-recyclable coffee cups at the University of Basel. This also helps to reduce the amount of waste in the university's canteens and cafeterias.

Status
The project was due to start in November 2020 at the University Main Library and Kollegienhaus locations. Initially, customers will be sensitised to the issue through posters and information events. The team has created a video showing the consumption of disposable coffee cups at the university. The next step is to order reusable coffee cups with the university logo and the SV, which can be sold at the individual locations.
Since 2022 a new reusable system for to-go cups is in place at the University of Basel. Coffee and other drinks can now be taken away in kooky cups for a deposit. They can easily be returned at the numerous return boxes, which are not only located on campus, but also at other locations in the city, such as at Basel SBB railway station. The deposit is then credited via an app. This makes it even easier to avoid disposable cups. With this implementation at the University of Basel, the project of the working group was successfully finished.
Early Demands Cafeteria
In collaboration with the skuba Executive Board, the Sustainability Working Group has drawn up a list of demands for the expansion of sustainable catering services at the University of Basel. Discussions have already taken place with Jennifer Kimmel (Staff Directorate Infrastructure & Operations) in order to introduce these suggestions for improvement in the right place, and a test phase of the proposed sustainable solutions is expected to take place in May.
